Finding a Simple Sentence
A couple of months ago, I decided to “graduate” from my previous company. It was a hard decision and a thoroughly thought one. So questions like “why do you move out” is a common thing to hear from my colleagues and friends recently. It takes me to tell a long story of why did I move out, multiple points breakdown, and overcomplicated reasons. There is no simple sentence that can explain it best… til yesterday.
Yesterday evening, I was participating in a humble e-discussion. One of the topics is related to resignment from a company. I found my 1-simple sentence there, mentioned by an experienced software engineer. Oh! and I’m paraphrasing it btw. My 1-simple sentence of why I decided to resign from my previous company is: I'm not proud of what I was working on.
As a software engineer, one of your core workloads is to build an app. I just realized that I started to take no pride in the web app that I was currently building back then. Surprisingly, it correlates with all of the main reasons for my resignation.
I’m not proud cause what I built isn’t matter much to internal stakeholders
I’m not proud cause what I built seems to not solving the user’s problem
I’m not proud cause what I built hasn’t got the proper place to serve its purpose
I’m not proud cause what I built felt so meaningless
There you go… that’s pretty much sums it up. I wish I know it back then so that I don’t have to dry my throat trying to explain what’s what 😂
At least now I can rest easy, knowing it is crystal clear.
