“The world isn’t binary. Everything isn’t black or white, yes or no. Sometimes is not a switch. It’s a dial.” — Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin

Most people tend to view that the world is filled with binary concepts. Good vs bad, black or white, there’s “we” & there’s “them”.

In fact, the world is not that simple. The world is messy, entangled, complex dynamics that are just too simple if we can divide it into just two categories.

Lots of things happened in a grey area. Things are related and even influence each other creating a cause & effect ripples:

I admit I’m not a good person. I don’t care too much about other people other than my close friends. I’m egotistical and if there’s a situation arise where I should choose myself or another person, I would most probably choose myself.

But when I said that I’m not a good person, that doesn’t mean that I’m bad at the same time. It just means that I’m in the negative state of “good”. Not good doesn’t automatically mean “bad”. It also applies to “bad”. Being “not bad” doesn’t mean that it is automatically good. It means that it’s in a negative state of “bad”. Sometimes when you eat food, you would say “hmm… not bad”. Why is it so? 🤔 Because you considered the food ain’t bad to the point would hate it — but it also doesn’t fall into your favorite group of food category, am I right?

So I think we should stop making direct associations between antonym and start treating them as mutually exclusive. So there will be:
1. Good
2. Not good
3. Bad
4. Not bad

It also applies to other things such as: ugly vs handsome, smart vs stupid, happy vs sad, etc. I believe by doing this, we could reach a better degree of logical thinking and see things clearer. Besides, doesn’t the king of pop say it himself: “it doesn’t matter if you’re black or white”.
