Hi guys 👋 Has anyone seen Dr. Strange In The Multiverse of Madness yet? Great movie. So um… as I got reminded of the magic in the MCU, I suddenly remembered a scene with an interesting dialog in the first Dr. Strange movie.

“A program, the source code that shapes reality”, said the Ancient One.

In a sense… I can relate to that.

We’re surrounded by technology nowadays. From the moment you wake up, you immediately check your smartphone for emails or incoming chats. Then you took a shower while playing your music that is stored in the cloud. Maybe you check your map apps to see if there’s any traffic to your office, or maybe you are face-timing your loved ones on your lunch break. The list will go on and on. While most of society is oblivious to how technology works, programmers on the other hand — could understand it.

As a person deep dive into the world of programming, they’ll start getting a gist of how today’s technology works. What is a server? How does the internet work? What exactly are mobile apps? How bout the hyped NFT? Or metaverse? It all comes down to a single word… a program. The digital era is being shaped by a bunch of programs, and being a programmer is the closest thing to the key to unlocking the secrets behind it. Like the sorcerers in the MCU where they have the source code to the secrets of the universe.

Programmers could connect people that are far apart by making apps like chat messenger or video conferencing apps. They can help you to feel like you’re in a movie theater even though you’re home with online streaming services. Some programmers who like to “play” (*iykwim) could create another world, just for you to get immersed in. These bizarre ideas that feel like can only be achieved by using “magic power”, turn out can be brought into this reality. All of that is achievable just by knowing how to program. That’s only the tip of the iceberg, don’t get me started with self-driving transportation, telemedicine, robotics, and many more!

As a programmer myself, sometimes I feel like I have some kind of “cheat code” cause I understand the basics of how most of the technology works. As the Ancient One said, it’s the “source code that shapes reality“. Then that means programmers are the ones who can shape today’s reality with “modern spells” — programming languages.

So… if you want to be a sorcerer supreme, learn how to code and be a programmer.
